On June 11th, 2009, at the ANTIQUORUM auction in NEW YORK, the only ROLEX that belonged to the American screen legend, Steve McQueen, was put up for sale.

Although a letter signed by his friend Jimmy Brucker, to whom the star offered the watch, certifies as to its perfect authenticity, the sad truth behind this historical ROLEX 5512 is that the dial and set of hands are not original.

But what is a ROLEX 5512 from 1967 with a dial dating from 1978 doing on the market?

At this time already, ROLEX’s American after-sales service applied a policy of changing the parts (risky in a country where class actions are commonplace).

Despite a ridiculous estimation at the time (USD 10,000 – 20,000), Steve McQueen’s watch reached a record price of USD 234,000.

A record which, of course, rewards the fact that it once belonged to the Hollywood star.

But imagine the value of this watch with its original dial.
